May 21st, 1998

It was 10 years ago today that the New(1998) New(1977) New(1967) Tomorrowland opened. Paul Pressler, with a boo from the audience, opened tomorrowland to the public with a ride on the attractions he let be put in, Astro Orbitor and Rocket Rods. Within a year the Rocket Rods will close and in five years the color scheme will change and Cosmic Waves will not fountain anymore. But, there is a great big beautiful tomorrow on the way. Here are a few shot from opening day.

I completely missed this period of DL. Having never gone to DL from 1988 to 2003. These are cool pics. Thanks for filling the void.

Viewliner, you didn't miss much! I saw the new (98) Tomorrowland about a week after it opened, I was soooooo disappointed, so much so that I still am!

Raymond, I sure hope "there is a great big beautiful tomorrow on the way"..... Thanks for sharing these.

It really is a shame that the political will wasn't there to make Tomorrowland '98 something that lived up to the promising aesthetic. I'd never been to Disneyland in that time (my first trip was in 2005) but whenever I see photos of it I just think it looks absolutely splendid. I love the bronze, copper and gold Treasure Planet look with the self-referencing Retro-Futurism... It's just too bad that the Rocket Rods didn't work, and the Submarine Voyage was still closed and Innoventions was underwhelming...

There is/was so much more that the could have done with this. But, I hope the new, new, new, new tomorrowland will be more fun. I would love to see Disneyland's tomorrowland more Jetsons future style, but I've learned that what I wont never happens LOL!!!!

Thanks for reminding me how truly ugly that version of TL was. What could they have been thinking? And what in God's name was that... that... thing on top of the Rocket Rods?

Looking for your future in the past is a terrible idea.
