I know it's been a bit dry from me lately. The trouble is I don't have many more of my pics to post. I've also been going through some hard times (who hasn't). I guess it's been dealing with the issues of my disability (I hate it), home issues and my upcoming mid-life crisis (I guess I'm going into it now...lol).

Well, It's been a long time. With spring here I thought is was a good time to look back at a spring day 24 years ago and see what was happening at Disneyland. Well, here we are at the end of main street waiting for the rope to drop. It's Circus Fantasy at Disneyland this spring. Behind that truck delivering ice cream to Carnation Plaza Gardens, is the WHEEL OF DOOM.

Above Main Street is the high acrobatics.

There seems to be a show going on at Plaza Gardens. It's called Clown Alley, we'll skip it as I don't like clowns. They'll eat me when I sleep.

Looks like some work over here in Bear Country. I bet they are just replacing the trees, yeah, that's it.

Looks like they are putting in a new entrance to Pirates. Boy this will sure ease the traffic in New Orleans Square.

Look at this new stair to Walt's Apartment, I wonder if we will ever get to go up in there. Being a cool day here at Disneyland, I want a sweater from Pendelton Woolen Mills. Pendelton has been a vendor here since opening day. I love all the shops here as they all carry unique merchandise appropriate to the land.

A busy day here in Fantasyland, Let's catch the Skyway To Tomorrowland.

I just had a hankerin' to play some video games. I love the second level of the Starcade.

And looking out the windows to Space Mountain.

So, Where has the time gone to. I have moved into my own home and been doing lots of work to it. I'd love to share with you some of my Disneyland collection.

First up is my dinning room wall. It screamed for something, tomorrowish....... So, I painted a big mural on the wall inspired by Tomorrowland '67.

This weeks Magazine Monday has Disney News from Winter 1980-81. Here we have a lovely picture of the Ernest S. Marsh in front of the Main Street Station. I guess the train is going to the dogs as look who's getting ready to board (Or exiting as that's where there standing)

One of the articles in this issue is of the Sunkist stores in Disneyland. If you look at the pictures you can see the interior of the Main Street location and what the Adventureland location, Sunkist I Presume, looked like before the Bengal Barbecue.

Both of these pics are from the late 80's. Here we have a pic of the Star Trader and Starcade. Perhaps the Mom with the big hair and bright yellow pants and her child are going to play video games in the second floor of the Starcade.

Ahh, For each day of sunshine a little rain must fall. In this pic you can see that the Peoplemover was in refurb.... I'm gonna run to the Premiere Shop to get out of the rain.

Today's post is different for me. This new year I will be sharing pieces of my collection with you. First up is Disney News from Winter 1976 - 77. There are a few interesting articles in it, but first is the cover.

Recently we lost the Bank on Disneyland's Main Street. Here is a nice little article about the Bank Of America with some interior pics too.

This article is just plain silly. BUT, we like hats!

Tomorrowland Terrace Rehab

Well, I honor of the Tomorrowland Terrace's Referb, I'd thought I'd post some pics from the 1997 gut job...er...refurbisment. First up is a pic through the wall at the north side. I was going through my peeping tom phase at the time. Notice it was still sponsored by Coke.

Here is an over the wall shot of the same area from the other side.

And here is the famous Tomorrowland Stage, still with the leftover "40 Years of Adventure" decoration on top. The original Rolly Crump artwork planter, on the top of the stage, was removed in 1990.

I don't get into much of what has been done to Disneyland on this blog as it will be done whether we like it or not. BUT, the new new Tomorrowland of 1998 was a failure on so many levels. One of the biggest was the gut job on the Tomorrowland Terrace. The Terrace was designed with everything WED had learned about food service and guest seating. Before the removal of the wings, there was not a need for all the table umbrellas as they shaded a good portion of the seating areas...... Anyway, I hope that they restore some more of it's glory with this referb like they did with the stage a few years ago.

Something different for your viewing pleasure. Today I am channeling Charles Phoenix and showing some Americana from 1959. First up is Riverside Raceway. That '55 Chevy looks like its moving purdy darn fast.

This is the city, Los Angeles, California. Things have sure changed in 50 years.

All these people are waiting for their Thanksgiving Dinner at the Senior Center. The caption should read, "Take the god-damn picture. I want my pumpkin pie."

Tomorrowland, Spring 1988

Here are a couple from Spring 1988. The first year of Blast to the Past was in full swing. I had just graduated from Mariner High School and celebrated with a trip to Disneyland. I drove down in my recently repainted 1979 Pontiac Grand Lemans 4-Door. I remember it was Maroon Red with Orange upholstery. Good Times!!!!!!

Here is a view of Tomorrowland's Themed Center, The PeopleMover. The Tomorrowland Terrace still had Orange Umbrellas (It hadn't gone to the lavender yet). The PeopleMover was just been repainted to the grey with color stripes and, though not pictured, Circle-Vision had gained their new sponsor. Delta Air Lines.

Hey there! A couple of random Shots for you today. Here is one of the "Metallic Sculpted Surfaces" from the Tomorrowland entrance circa 1989.

So, Now for something completely different.

I am a Nun. Not your traditional Nun, but a Nun with The Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence. Here in Arizona, our house raises money for local charities, educate about HIV/AIDS and go around and just listen and brighten the day.

This weekend, We held our 2 annual Red Hot Salvation red dress party. In Arizona there are 36 of us and we had 10 visiting sisters from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

This years event, which I am the Chairnun for, raised money for The Bill Holt Clinic for Pediatric HIV/AIDS. We raised over $2500 for the clinic.

Here are some post cards from the late 80's and early 90's. The first one is from 1987. In Tomorrowland you can see a '57 Chevy Teal colored PeopleMover train just exiting from PSA's America The Beautiful and crossing over the entrance. Can't you just hear the narration? "From here you can see the heart of Disneyland, it's the Plaza, gateway to the themed.........." Next is a card from the early '90's. With a crane back in what will become Toontown and scaffolding up on 'it's a small world', I think its late 1990. It looks like they're building what will become the "Backstage with Baloo dressing room" attraction from Disney's Afternoon Ave - Live" for spring 1991.

Pirates Extended Queue 1987

For my friends over at Mice Chat, here is the only shot I have of the Pirates extended queue. Disney was constructing the new overpass/entrance at the time.

In this closeup, you can see supports for a balcony right in the center of the pic. In the back, I believe is two drinking fountains (remember those).

When I graduated from college, my parents gave me a trip to Paris (as a art student, there was no place else I wanted to go to). So in 1994 I got to go to Paris. And since I was a Disney geek I wanted to see the newest of the Magical Kingdoms. Here are a couple of shots from Main Street (before those UGLY lamp poles were put in). Everything was still new. Backstage 1997

Here is a pic from '97. It was during the Tomorrowland refit and we see some stuff in storage for that. In the middle is the sculpture that used to grace the entrance to Space Mountain lying on its side. It is now the sculpture that is closest to the Star Trader. If you look at it close enough, on your next visit to Tomorrowland, you can see where it was cut (so it could be laid down) and welded back together. To the right in the pic is the Mouserail. It is waiting for it's dismantling to go into the que for Rocket Rods. This pic is about where the entrance to the parking garage is now.

Here is a bumper sticker from the 1970-80's for the Main Street Electrical Parade. What I find weird is that it's the Disneyland Electrical Parade. Who knows what they were thinking. I am gonna try a different technique to capture this sticker in all its glory. But for now this will do.

A Picture's Mate And A Rant

A few months ago I posted a pix of the Disney Showcase on Main Street during the time it was painted brown and yellow. I couldn't remember when it was but I now know, 1990. Here is a mate to that pix. It shows the Disney Showcase in all it's baby doo-doo brown (I recently re-read a book (David Koenig) that says painters on Main Street would sometime change a color as the individual thought it looked better, I wonder if this is one of those times). Next door is The Town Square Cafe, although it's time is nearly up. OK, now a rant! In a post here at Videblog in January 2007, I posted a pix of the "Return to OZ" unit in the Main Street Electrical Parade. This pix has shown up on numerous websites and blogs without a mention of who the pix belongs to. Unless otherwise noted all pics on this blog were taken by me. I know that I can't do anything about it now, but it just gets my undies in a bunch that some people take credit for something that they didn't do. If there is any argument to any pics that show up here I have the slide or negative to prove who the are owned by. I know that Disney owns all legal crap on their theme parks blah blah blah, but own up to the fact that the image was taken by someone and include that info.
I'm done now with my rant.

The 30th Again

Going with the 30th theme some more. Here is a shot of Town Square right before the Rededication ceremony (They do that alot on the anniversary days). As you can see there is a giant bed sheet up infront of the Main Street station as the background. At the bottom of the pix is the control station for the sound and lights. Boy do I remember that it was HOT that day.

A Piney New Year

For your approval, here is a pix of Alpine Gardens circa 1988. For those that don't remember Alpine Gardens, it was the front and back yards of Monsanto's House of the Future. When the House was removed in 1967, Disney left the gardens intact including the covered patio which was turned into a gift stand. The majority of the gardens remained intact even through the subsequent remodels of Ariel's Grotto and Pixie Hollow. So when you look at the area today remember that some of that landscaping dates back to 1957. Happy New Year!!!!!

Christmas On Main Street, USA

This shot is from the mid '90s. The time period between Flower Street and the Carnation Cafe. Carnation's Ice Cream Parlor it to the right, where the Blue Ribbon Bakery is now and it was overflow seating for the Parlor outside. I do have to say I prefer it this way to the way it is now as it is just too congested in this area. In front, it's the Dickens Band playing Christmas songs for you. Happy Holidays, Everyone!

Main Street, USA! West Side! April, 1988

Here is part two of the Main Street USA series from April 1988. First up is the old locker building that was behind The Emporium. I think that this facade was much more in line with the feel of Town Square. What bothers me most about the Emporium addition in the early 1990's is that the style of the facades are more Queen Anne than Victorian.

The next two shots show the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor. This was during the first Blast To the Past Spring Promotion in 1988. The Parlor was dressed up as a 1950's malt shop.

Here are some odds and ends for you today. First up is a pic of America Sings. In this pic you can see the railing very well that my colleague over at Disneyland Nomenclature Blog has a wonderful close up of.

Next, we have the 1967 Tomorrowland dedication plaque that was in the planter at the entrance to the land. It was removed in 1994 for some unknown reason.

And for those ticket junkies, you know who you are (Vintage Disneyland Ticket Blog guy :D ), here is one of mine from April 1988. A three day pass for $41.50? Count me in!!!!!!!!

Fantasyland 1987

Here are a few from April 1987. First up a view of "it's a small world" from the Videopolis entrance. Note the absence of the toy shop. It was much more clean back then too. Also note how level the ground is because there is no Toontown yet.

Next up is a view from the Skyway to Tomorrowland. Here is a view of the roof of Peter Pan/Mr. Toad/Alice.

Hormel, Central Soya and before McDonald's

Here are some random shots of Frontierland from the 80's and 90's. First up is The River Belle Terrace, brought to you by Hormel - Makers of Fine Meat. Next up is Big Thunder Ranch (remember Big Thunder BBQ?), brought to you by those fine people at Central Soya.

Up last is the Harbor Galley. When this eating establishment opened it served seafood delights. A few years later, we got overpriced fries. Ewwwww! Lets hope they return this establishment back to something worth eating.

This shot is from 1997, during the Tomorrowland remodel. This is from the backstage area behind the Country Bear Theater. There, laying on the ground is the entrance sculpture to Space Mountain (the original 1977 one). It currently is the one next to the Star Trader. But if you look further in the pic, you'll see the Mouserail. Sitting in storage for years after the 35th anniversary, it will soon be chopped up and painted grey, outlined in orange tape and put into the que for Rocket Rods.

Here is a ticket to a private party that I went to in 1995, the year of Indy. This was I believe the last year for this particular private party. If you have never been to a private party at Disneyland, it is a surreal experience. Low crowd numbers, dancers everywhere but as I remember 3 food facilities for 30,000 people! Oy!

Long before Tinkerbell and Ariel, but after the House of the Future was a little out of the way place called Alpine Gardens. In the photo below is a shot of the souvenir stand that is in the place that Ariel used to spin out. The souvenir stand was originally the four seasons porch from the House of the Future. Look at all them postcards.

I have been very busy lately here in Phoenix. I was the chair of this city's first Red Dress Party called "Red Hot Salvation". It was a fundraiser for the Bill Holt Clinic for Pediatric AIDS. We raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000. And I have had a guest all the way from Paris. So I've been showing him the beautiful Southwest! Anyway, I'll be back on a more regular schedule next week after I get back from Disneyland.

Here is one for you before I go on my birthday trip to Disneyland. This pic should be over at Charles Phoenix's page. Look at the happy kids in this pic. Brother and sister. Dig the boys highchair. And look at all of the state-of-the-art audio equipment there, 8 tracks, reel to reel and records. In the background, on the floor, is a electric sports car. Weee! OK, I'm making fun of me! This pic has nothing to do with Disneyland other than me being in it! Dated January 1972, I was 2 1/2 years old. My dad, like myself now, was heavily into Audio/Visual production. It's fun to look back at some of those things that make you who and what you are. It is fun to know that my Dad still has all of that equipment and it still works.
God, I'm feeling old!

Knott's Berry Farm 1959

Here are some pics of a trip my mom and dad took when they first started dating in 1959 (they were married in 1962). These are from October of 1959. Knott's sure doesn't look like this anymore (not for the best).

Here are some newly discovered pics that I forgot I had. This is my first Christmas at Disneyland in 1995. First up, Main Street, USA! I loved when they had the garland over the street.

The Coke Corner. I can hear Rod Miller playing in the back of my head and that is him in the picture (If you look closely). I often hear voices, so this is nothing new!

The Plaza Inn when you could eat there when I wasn't your birthday.

The Castle and it's trees. I miss them at Christmas. I am SOOOOO glad they are reopening the walkthru!

And finally, a sight you can't see anymore, Monorail Red Stripe circling the Matterhorn!

Something special pt. 2

In my last post I posted pics of my very first Disneyland Model. Now you will get to see what I learned to do with scale and accuracy. From the pics in my last post, we have journeyed about 10 years to 1993. Now mind you I had been building models for all that time, my own version of Disneyland. This is the model where I put what I had learned all together at the same time. This is my model of Tomorrowland. I built it to represent three different time periods 1967, 1977, 1987 (in the late 90's I started a 1997 version but gave up as I hated the '97 Tomorrowland). I know that I posted some of these pics a long time ago, but I just found the slides and these are new scans.

So there are sections of the model left. I still have the Carousel Theater, Star Tours, the Tomorrowland Stage and the Peoplemover. Time was not good to the model as it was built of paper and wood. Anyway, there you are. A career that could have been!

So, OK! I swore I would never show these pics but the last couple of days and chatting with Katella Gate in my last post got me thinking. I wanted to be a Model Maker, work in a model shop, make models of new buildings. I new this a 10 years old. I'd take car model kits and kitbash them with others before anyone new the meaning of kitbashing. In 1982 I decided that I was going to build a model of Disneyland in the basement of my house. My parents let me do it as they always were a solid influence in my quest for artistic creativity. I started building my model. I had no sense of scale, but I knew how big I wanted it to be. First up was the castle. I knew if I built that I would have the right size for the rest of it. Well, after that came Main Street station, then all of Main Street. I had no aerial photos, detail shots or other. I had my 1981 Disneyland Souvenir Guidebook and Disneyland, The First Quarter Century book (I had the 1983 Guidebook later, Which confused the hell out of me about Fantasyland). To a 12 year old infatuated with the park, these were gold. So I used what I had to build the model. The pics below are of what it looked like when I thought I was done with it in spring 1984.
So its TERRIBLY out of scale, missing parts, Tomorrowland is a mess but I was a budding artist and we all had to start someplace.

So if you haven't been able to ever tell in this blog, I love the Tomorrowland Terrace circa 1967-92 (before the lavender). So on this post I'd thought I'd give you some "corners" of the Terrace.
First up we have a pic of the north entrance to the dance floor. Ahhh, all the yellow ocher and orange.

Hey Kiddies,

Sorry my posts are a little bit more sporadic than usual lately. You see, I have been given the task of scanning EVERYTHING my family has in the way of slides, prints, documents..... OY!

I have so far scanned over 1500 slides (a box and a half) and have thousands to go. So I will have different things to post in the future as far as tourist activities in photos. So first up is this slide below. It was taken in March 1962. Anyone know where this is?

So, here we are again. Back to 1991 and Afternoon Ave. Here is the entrance to afternoon ave.

This is the year they built the overpass for the Disneyland Railroad for the entrance to the future Mickey's Toontown. But for this spring promotion it leads to the Tailspin Meet and Greet.

It was 10 years ago today that the New(1998) New(1977) New(1967) Tomorrowland opened. Paul Pressler, with a boo from the audience, opened tomorrowland to the public with a ride on the attractions he let be put in, Astro Orbitor and Rocket Rods. Within a year the Rocket Rods will close and in five years the color scheme will change and Cosmic Waves will not fountain anymore. But, there is a great big beautiful tomorrow on the way. Here are a few shot from opening day.

Next up is the old roof for the carousel. Notice how the paint is peeling off, and this is in the early 80's

Finally for today, we have the side of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Complete with Skyway support tower.

A Couple Of Characters

Ha, ha. Hiya, everybody!(in my best Mickey voice) Today we have some characters. First up is Mickey and Minnie. I'm thinking that this shot is from the 35th birthday (judging from the ribbon on Mickey). OMG, do you know how hard it would be to get this shot today?

Today in the roll of Goofy is Eyore. Same time period as above. I know it's just the way the pic is taken, but Goofy looks depressed. Perhaps he has future knowledge of the next ten years.

This final shot I believe is from 1988. Obviously I was trying to capture Pooh and Tigger, but look at the castle in the background. I know some of you youngins won't remember the castle when it was covered in ivy and looked more 'real' in it's original colors rather than Barbie's dream house as it does today (not a fan of the glossy and sparkly paint).
So, I want to thank you all again for your fine comments. To answer a few questions, yes, yes, no and I can't remember. Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!! Just kidding!

A Few Shots Of Frontierland

Here is an area that I don't get to much, Frontierland. These shots date back to 1991.
First up is a lovely pic of the Columbia in Fowler's Harbor. It is taken from the treehouse (I don't go up there very often). What's fun about this pic is what is right behind the Columbia....... It's the Bertha Mae!!!!!

YAY!!!! I finally made it. The big 100! So I thought I'll give you a treat. This Pic was taken 20 years ago to the day. A Tomorrowland in a new birth. Below you see a Que building up for a brand new Star Tours (well, in its second year). Remember when the line was that long? Also you see a PeopleMover in transition too. One of the old color trains is pulling into the Star Tours building while the rest in this shot are of the new colors. In the Plaza, you can see the Jukebox center stage for Blast To The Past. Enjoy!!!!! Edit: I just noticed something else in the pic. Below the Peoplemover beam and just behind the tree in the forground is a America Sings cast member in their red, white and blue costume.

After Pacific Southwest Airlines

Following the merger of PSA and America West Airlines in 1988, Disneyland was left without a sponser for World Premier CircleVision. Well Walt Disney World had Delta Airlines, so can Disneyland. Below is a couple of pics from the opening weekend (No, I was there by chance). The first pic is of a package price guide celebrating the opening of the attraction on April 3rd, 1989.

This pic is from April 2nd, 1989. The attraction opened the next day. Note that the marque has changed from the PSA purple colors to Delta's blues. In a few years this marque will be replaced with the attraction's final one.

Here is a view of the waiting area with the Delta action wall.

1986 Subs

Today we have the Submarine Voyage. In the Mid 80's, Disneyland decided to give their subs a less military, more explorer look. So off came the military gray and the first of the new color schemes. This version had a yellow, white and blue look (some with light peachy color accents). Later in the 80's the subs were painted a yellow/orange combination. So here is a look at them from the Skyway. Enjoy!
